Closed Work Permit
An employer-specific work permit allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which includes the name of the employer you work for, how long you can work and the location where you can work.
LMIA
A Labour Market Impact Assessment is a document that an employer in Canada must usually get before hiring a foreign worker. If you get a positive LMIA issued from Employment and Social Development of Canada. You are eligible to apply for an employer specific work permit, if an employer has offered you a job offer and have received a positive LMIA.
You may be exempt from needing an LMIA if your current temporary job is LMIA-exempt, states a specific employer or employers, and is
- Covered by an international agreement like NAFTA, GATS and non-trade agreements
- Covered by an agreement between Canada and a province or territory
- Designated by the Minister
- Charity and religious work (not including volunteers)
- Exempt for “Canadian Interests” reasons: Significant benefit: if your employer can prove you will bring an important social, cultural, and/or economic benefit to Canada Reciprocal Employment: lets foreign workers get jobs in Canada when Canadians have similar opportunities in other countries
