Permanent Residence

A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada. There are various ways to acquire permanent residency in Canada.

A foreign national must apply through Express Entry online process, be invited to apply for permanent resident status, and then apply to meet requirements of one of the following programs

  • At least one year (1560 hours total/30 hrs. per week) of full time or an equal amount in part time skilled work experience in Canada
  • Have gained your experience in Canada with the proper authorization 
  • Meet the required language levels needed for your job for each language: [ Managerial jobs (NOC Skill Level O) = CLB 7, Professional jobs (NOC skill type A) = CLB 7, Technical jobs and skilled trades (NOC skill type B) = CLB 5]
  • Plan to live outside the province of Quebec
  • Work Experience obtained as a student do not count
  • At least one year (1560 hours total/ 30hrs per week), continuous, full time or an equal amount in part-time skilled work experience 
  • Paid Work (Volunteer work, unpaid internships, do not count) in the same position within the last 10 years at skill type O, or skill levels A or B
  • Language Ability= CLB 7 in all sections
  • Proof of Funds may be required if you do not have arranged employment 
  • Minimum points requirement on a separate selection grid. (Pass mark of 67)
  • Must meet the minimum score of CLB 5 for Speaking and Listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing
  • During the five years before an application is submitted, applicants must have acquired at least two years of full-time work experience, or the equivalent in part time work in their skilled trade occupation
  • The foreign national must meet the relevant employment requirements of the skilled trade occupation as set out in the National Occupational Classification, except for needing a certificate of qualification.
  • The foreign national must have an offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least one year or a certificate of qualification issued by the relevant Canadian provincial or territorial authority

The family class category of immigration facilitates family reunification by permitting Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor specified categories of family members

Each province has different immigration categories or processing streams for a foreign national to apply for permanent residence status. The PNP provides provinces with the benefits of targeted recruiting and the selection of foreign nationals who can help meet the local labour market and economic needs of each province, such as filling a skills shortage or attracting specialized occupational skills.

CITIZENSHIP ELIGIBILITY rEQUIREMENTS
  • You must have permanent resident status in Canada. You must not:
    - Be under review for immigration fraud reasons
    - Be asked by Canadian officials to leave Canada
    - Have unfulfilled conditions related to your PR Status
  • Adults and some minors must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1095 days during the five years right before the date you sign your application.
  • You need to have filed taxes in Canada for at least 3 years during the 5 years right before the date you apply.
  • If you’re 18 to 54 years of age on the day you sign your application, you must show that you can speak and listen at a specific level in one of these languages. To become a citizen, you need to meet the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Level 4 or higher.
  • If you are 18 to 54 years of age on the day you sign your application, you need to take the citizenship test. You will need to answer questions about the rights and responsibilities of Canadian’s and Canada’s history, geography, economy, government, laws and symbols.
  • If you committed a crime in or outside Canada, you may not be eligible to become a Canadian citizen for a period.
